Highlights from ditto BIG SUMMER COOKOUT

leave a comment

The month of August saw a slight change in pace for the ditto Campfire. The first annual ditto Summer Cookout held at The Lighthouse was a great success, with inflatable palm trees to mouth-watering barbecue food and luscious summer cocktails, a great night was had by all.

We would like to extend a personal thank you to the talented and highly entertaining Robert Castellani, who provided a wonderful array of acoustic accompaniment to the night’s playful proceedings. We caught up with Robert after the gig to get a glimpse of his story.

Robert tells us a bit about himself and his music career so far.

“I started playing guitar at about the age of 14, so for the last nine years. In 2002 and 2003 I was runner-up in the National ‘Guitarist of the Year’ grand finals. Since then I have studied music and played in several bands all over the country. For the last few years though I have been focusing on my acoustic guitar music. I also work for Roland UK and am also a lecturer at Suffolk New College.

Music has been the centre of my life and I have committed many years to working hard at my craft. A combination of that and meeting some kind and influential people along the way have definitely helped sculpt my career.”

Robert tells us about the music that he played at Campfire and the influences from which he derived his set.

“I play in a strange style, which seems to have adopted the name ‘percussive guitar’. It involves a lot of taps and knocks on the body of the acoustic guitar in order to create drum sounds and other textures to the music. I first saw this performed by an Irish guitarist named Eric Roche who opened up all these ideas to me. Since then I have also drawn inspiration from Michael Hedges and Thomas Leeb.

“I also like a lot of folk music but my musical influences come from blues, rock, funk and everything I used to listen to as a youngster.

“When it comes to writing music, it should be said that I also gain a lot of influence from the emotions that you feel…Things that make you feel happy or sad… or eccentric or funky.”

Robert gives us some insight to what he would have liked the audience to have experienced from his music.

“I hope people are entertained by what I do. Playing the guitar the way I do has quite an exiting visual quality which I hope is good for putting on a show. I hope that people can see the emotional depth though, the thing that makes them feel a groove or a sensitive melody or chord progression.”

You can find out more about Robert’s up and coming gigs from his website, and listen to his music and become a fan at his myspace page, or contact him directly via email if you would like him for a gig of your own.

September’s Campfire brings us a very esteemed guest in Martyn Ware, founding member of both The Human League and Heaven 17, and currently working with Illustrious, creating new forms of spatialised sound composition using a unique three-dimensional AudioScape surround-sound system.

He will be telling us his extraordinary story as we move into the last few months of 2010 and the dark nights begin to creep in.

So, please place 16th September in your diary now, and we will forward over more information soon.

Highlights from Jamie Milne & Glenfiddich

All at ditto would like to thank Jamie Milne for taking the time out of his quite hectic schedule of helping people learn and appreciate more about whisky and Glenfiddich, to present his story and that of Glenfiddich at our last campfire. A brilliant evening that saw us go from rockets to whisky, many a sample was imbibed and we think everyone walked away with a greater understanding of the drink that is, ‘The Water of Life’ and how to always strive for the things you want most.

We would all like to thank Mike London and Richard Norris for taking time out of their busy schedules to come along and chat about their award winning film ‘Hope’ in May. It was a suitably fitting choice as it coincided with the first anniversary of the Roundhouse show where it was originally shown.

From the Wizard of Oz to a naked man in the woods was never going to be a dull tale, add to this a psychedelic soundtrack almost reminiscent of the scene from the film itself and we had all the ingredients for another classic Campfire. Watch below to see the highlights and, of course, the film itself.

On the 16th May 2009 ditto’s project for the Short Circuit Festival at London’s Roundhouse reached its culmination; a production a filled with one off collaborations and brand new work that would never be repeated. A unique performance that blended film, music, dance and art to tell a story about the human condition; it was a very special start to what has been a spectacular journey for everyone involved.

One of the collaborations that made the night so special was the film ‘Hope’, directed by Mike London with a soundtrack by Richard Norris in his The Time and Space Machine guise. On April 27th, almost one year on from its debut screening, the film collected an accolade for ‘Best Music Video’ at the London Independent Film Festival, an incredible achievement and one we at ditto are very proud to celebrate.

To mark the occasion Mike London and Richard Norris will be our next Campfire Storytellers. We sat down with them to talk about how ‘Hope’ came together.

Introducing… Mike London and Richard Norris

leave a comment

We are delighted to welcome two very special guests to Campfire, as filmmaker Mike London and musician Richard Norris come to The Lighthouse on May 20th to talk about the award winning film ‘Hope’, shot specially for ditto’s inaugural performance at The Roundhouse last May. This wonderful collaboration was shortlisted for the London Independent Film Festival Award for Best UK Music Video, fending off stiff competition to win at the ceremony on April 24th.

Mike London has been an advertising creative for nearly 20 years, working at some of London’s top agencies including Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe, where he is currently based. In that time he has written award winning ads and commercials for many of the worlds major brands including Land Rover, Virgin Atlantic, Daewoo, Lloyds TSB and Danone to name but a few. He hopes to share some of his insight into the process of realising pitches as he take the Campfire audience on a journey through ‘Hope’.

Mike will be joined on the night by Richard Norris. Richard is a veteran of the music industry, and the man behind acts The Grid, Beyond the Wizards Sleeve and The Time and Space Machine. His unique and off-kilter take on music production created an inspirational soundtrack for ‘Hope’, and we look forward to hearing some of his insight into what it takes to create such a beautiful and cinematic accompaniment.

So join us for another wonderful Campfire Story, and stay tuned to the Campfire blog for exclusive interviews as the night draws nearer.
